This area has an endless number of locations that can be used to create unique senior pictures. We decided to do all natural light for this session and found many spots with beautiful ambient light. I frequently use my studio lighting outdoors on location but we left it behind this time so we could move more freely through the area and I am very pleased with our results.

Emily and I met at mid afternoon on one of the hottest days in June. The upper 90 degree temperature did not seen to phase this pretty teen.

I was excited when Mariah, 2013 Riverview graduate, volunteered to help me test this look. Sometimes a concept test works, sometimes it doesn't. When it does not I make adjustments and then try it again. This time it worked on our first try. The lighting and materials worked as planned and Mariah did an excellent job executing it. 

She arrived at the ddh Photo Shop Studio with lot's of family support. Her mom and grandmother were busy designing her custom dress from the very shiny sheets of material that I had purchased. They collaborated on the fashion design, cutting, taping, clipping, adjusting and making sure that everything was perfect. Mariah's brother came along to lend his encouragement and he also enjoyed a little time with the quarter horses in the pasture next door to my studio.

Here are a few images from our test. We have more to share, but it will be a few weeks before I can. Mariah submitted several images to a magazine and we are anxiously waiting to see if they will be selected for publication.

- A fun sports theme. The perfect candidate for this is a teen boy or girl that knows how to swing a bat and drive the ball to the outfield with authority.

Ben grew up in Judsonia and graduated from Riverview High School in 2010.  He is a very talented chef. When he is not in their shop building custom frames you may find him preparing meals at his parent’s business, KJ’s Restaurant, or he may be creating gourmet meals at home. Ben is a fanatical fan of the music of Angels and Airwaves and he is an avid collector of Macbeth shoes.

Kaytlin is from Searcy. She graduated in 2010 from American School Home School Program. She loves to design and decorate. This impressive young woman began to purchase furniture and other items for her future home back when she was as young as fourteen.

Ben and Kaytlin shamelessly spoil their yellow lab, Chubbs. They are currently planning a backyard Bark-BQ Party for him complete with activities and decorations from In Any Event.

We have a tendency to live in the moment and we often forget how quickly time escapes us. When we are busy it is easy to put off capturing photographs like this until tomorrow. As I sit here typing this we are experiencing another early 2014 ice storm, but this cold weather is about over. It's time to start thinking about setting up your spring portrait sessions. My photography schedule will fill quickly when warm weather returns so reserve a date for your session now. 

This is a natural light image, but my studio lighting equipment is portable and I take it on location throughout central Arkansas - and beyond. This photography session was on a ranch south east of Little Rock in a rural area next to the Arkansas River. I always like to have lighting options with me. When the available light is as beautiful as it is here, I use it. When the available light just is not quite right I set up my strobes, soft boxes and umbrellas to create light that flatters my subjects.

I hear voices. Some of those voices drive me a little crazy! 

I frequently hear compliments about my photography, and I sincerely appreciate every one. I also hear comments that frustrate me. They go a little like this -- 'I would schedule a session, but I am not pretty like others you work with'. -- Every time I hear that it makes me a little, a little, well a little crazy!

The women I photograph are pretty. They are pretty as they naturally are, and they are pretty when they are all 'glammed up' for a photo session. Professional makeup, hair styling, lighting and photography does not make a person pretty. It just enhances beauty that is already there, and I believe that everyone is beautiful.

I have decided to add a Before/After page to my website. I have added these composites to encourage women who think - 'I am not pretty' - to take time to rediscover their beauty that may have been forgotten.

I have had the pleasure of doing several fun photo sessions with this pretty Conway, Arkansas member of Mensa. If you are not familiar with Mensa I recommend that you Google it. It is a group of incredibly intelligent people. She also is an avid collector of beautiful vintage dresses. We have worked in a Conway park, at Mike's Place Restaurant,  http://mikesplaceconway.com/ ,  and in her home while dodging her two very large, energetic greyhound dogs. What more could a photographer ask for!

I always enjoy being the photographer for their performances. Live theater is quite a change from the Senior and Beauty sessions that I normally focus on. The holiday season is a busy one for everyone, but I encourage you to try to find the time to get out and see one of the performances of this play. I may be a little biased, but I think that our community dinner theater is one of the best in Arkansas. We were at Little Rock's Two River's park. If you have not been there I highly recommend it! We started our session with a quick 'before' snapshot then Morgan's manager, Monika, applied her makeup. They were the perfect team for a beauty photographer. We spent the rest of the session photographing Morgan in different areas of the expansive park.

This is a different look from my portfolio photography session with DeAna. We had a two car convoy as we went from site to site in BeeBe Arkansas. DeAna's fuel tank was on empty so I waited while she stopped to fill up with gasoline. I spotted an interesting auto repair shop across the street and walked over to see if the owner would give us permission to use the outside of his building as a background. 

We went over after she finished fueling her car and did a few quick photos before moving on to a fall color scene. She did an excellent job of looking into the direct afternoon sun so I could capture this image. Arkansas's small towns have so many interesting locations for photography, many of them with great character! I may have to go back to this repair shop for one of my senior sessions. It would be fun to do a few inside the facility too.

DeAna contacted me recently and wanted to create some images with fall colors to add to her modeling book. We spent the afternoon scouting sites in and around Beebe and ran out of time long before we ran out of fantastic locations. DeAna is formally trained and makes the job for her photographer incredibly easy. She is such a pleasure to work with! I will adding more photos from this session to my blog in the next few days.

I was recently on the flight line of the Little Rock Air Force Base completely engulfed by a large crowd of excited, nervous, crying, laughing families and spouses. They were all there to welcome their Airman back from an extended deployment in the Middle East. I attended the event to photograph Tori and her husband Chris as they were reunited. I noticed this returning Airman drop to his knee in the middle of the chaos and was able to capture a quick snapshot as he proposed and slipped an engagement ring on the finger of his bride to be.

I feel fortunate to have been accepted to be a member of Operation LoveReunited, http://www.oplove.org/. OpLove  is a non-profit, fully volunteer organization that offers professional photography sessions to military families and members who are getting ready to deploy, who are currently deployed, or those who are coming home. The staff and volunteers of Center on the Square in Searcy, Arkansas, http://centeronthesquare.org/,  dedicate their time and talent to bring excellent live stage productions to Searcy. They give the members of our community of all ages the opportunity to participate by performing on stage or helping behind the scenes in many areas including set design, costumes, music, food service, photographer - - - .

This weekend they are performing two Kid's Stage productions, Law and Order: Nursery Rhyme Unit with a 3rd through 6th grade cast and The Audition by our 7th through 12th grade students. Don't you just love this senior's pretty smile! Alicia is a Searcy High School senior and she also helped me test out locations. I had so much fun working with these four girls. Morgan is another Searcy High School senior that worked with me to test the new locations. Rustic would be an under statement for describing this spot. This shop offers a photographer a multitude of backgrounds and shapes. The light here is fantastic and can vary from soft and beautiful to bright and edgy. I edited this photo in both color and black&white. I liked both a lot and had trouble deciding which one to post. 

The owner of this shop gave me a puzzled look when I asked for permission to use his business for our photo session. I could see his eyes and expression asking 'why anyone would want to take photos here'! . I guess we all look at things differently. As a photographer I am attracted to unique areas like this that have history and that can tell a story. Searcy has unlimited variety in options to create senior photos that will stand out and be different that the rest.

Lauren is another of the seniors that worked with me to test out new locations. She did a fantastic job and I hope I get to work with her again. The owners of Cruise Planners, http://www.coolcruiseplanners.com/ , were kind to give us permission to use the murals painted around their Searcy office. The artwork that they have there offers the unique variety that a photographer like me looks for. They are very nice people and I recommend that you contact them if you are considering a cruise vacation.

I used a ring light for this image. I believe that I am the only photographer in the area that uses this. This light gives a unique look for a photographer. It can be modified produce a variety of looks from very, very soft to crisp and edgy. I selected it for this photo to bring out the saturated colors of the background. This photo was taken in the trees by the Carmichael Community Center, http://www.searcy.com/city/parks-and-rec/carmichael-community-center. I will definitely be using this location again. The light was beautiful and the site can offer a variety of unique looks based on the features of the park that are used, the time of day and direction the photographs are taken from. I will be sharing more images from this location later this week.
